CAL International support the LCR ‘Make it Work’ Robotics Challenge grand final at Liverpool Exhibition Centre!

The LCR ‘Make it Work’ Robotics Challenge consisted of a number of events supported by the Liverpool City Region (LCR) Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram, and facilitated by All About STEM. Local businesses, such as CAL International, were given the opportunity to sponsor a heat and then support the winning team from this heat in the grand final. The event was held at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool on 26th March.

CAL International were sponsors of the St. Helens’ heat of the competition, with the winners being Haydock High School. Runners-up from the heat, Rainford High School, were also selected to compete in the final due to scoring so highly in their heat! Both Haydock High and Rainford High were supported and mentored by CAL International at the grand final.

Similarly to the heats, the final consisted of 10 teams of four students from local schools building a VEX robot and battling them out in an exciting arena-style competition. The students were required to use their knowledge of STEM subjects, experience from their heat, team work and determination to complete the construction of their robot, attach the battery and ensure they were fully functioning! Unlike the heats, the final also consisted of a number of other challenges and competitions, including brand and teamwork challenges, with prizes to be won for each.

One of the extra challenges was a skills obstacle course where the teams were required to carefully but quickly navigate their robots through an obstacle course. Fantastically, Rainford High were successful in completing the course in the quickest time, making them the skills course champions!

Having superbly built their robots, both Haydock High and Rainford High were successful in the first round of the competition and so moved on to the second! After nail-biting matches here, Haydock High were triumphant once again and moved on to the semi finals! After a tense semi final match which saw fantastic skills from both teams, Haydock High narrowly missed out on a place in the final battle.

The worthy winners of the Robotics Challenge were Arch Bishop Beck Catholic College, who were rewarded with some fantastic prizes. All teams also received a goodie bag which included a CAL t-shirt and drawstring bag! CAL International donated special prizes for the wining team consisting of a vernier, metal ruler, engineering reference pocket book and engineers’ reference handbook! These tools will hopefully inspire and encourage the children’s love of STEM subjects and support them in becoming potential engineers of the future!

CEO of CAL International, Cliff Kirby, and Technical Director, Lee Fogg, attended the final along with members of the CAL team including Matthew, who presented the award for the brand challenge. Cliff also announced that CAL International would match fund the prizes from the day, meaning all schools involved can invest more into STEM subjects, further nurturing the passion in students such as those in attendance at the event to pursue careers in engineering.

The LCR Make it Work Robotics Final was a truly fantastic day that CAL International are proud to have been a part of. The exciting atmosphere in the room from the get-go was contagious and it was wonderful to see so many local students excelling in engineering activities!

Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: “Sparking young people’s interest and enthusiasm is a vital part of getting more of them into studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects and subsequently into exciting and rewarding careers. That is exactly what this competition does and why we are proud to support it.”

All About STEM is ‘making it happen’ across Merseyside, Cheshire and Warrington. They work on lots of different projects to bring exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to schools across the region, linking them with business and industry.
