CAL International were proud sponsors of the All About STEM Liverpool City Region (LCR) Make It Work Robotics Challenge St. Helens heat. This is part of a number of heats taking place in other Liverpool City Regions over the course of 6 months, each event producing a winning team which will go on to a grand final later in the year in Liverpool! The St Helens heat took place in the STEM building at St Helens College and saw a number of schools from the local area take part.

There were eight teams, each consisting of four members who, with some support and guidance from the engineering apprentices at CAL International, built and competed a VEX robot. The children used their knowledge of STEM subjects, team work and determination to complete the construction of their robot, attach the battery and ensure they were fully functioning! The sessions were also an opportunity to showcase careers linked to manufacturing and engineering, highlight pathways into them and develop skills.

Once the robots were built, tested and practised, the teams went head to head in an exciting arena-style competition which saw winners progress from heats to a semi-final and then final! The winning team were Haycock High School, who are going forward to the final held at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool later in the year and will be sponsored and mentored by CAL International.

Technical Director of CAL International, Lee Fogg, added “I am so impressed by the skills, determination and attention to detail that the children were showing when building their robots. All About STEM do amazing work and the children are visibly inspired by taking part in their workshops. The CAL team and I had a fantastic day in St. Helens sponsoring the Make It Work Challenge and are eagerly looking forward to working with the winning team from Haydock High School for the final!”

Supporting and investing in the development of STEM across the UK is important to CAL, as they allow children to discover the exciting and rewarding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics based careers that are available in their local area.

CAL International are very proud of their apprentices and the progress they have made within the company and in their studies. All About STEM link their participators with business and industry, teaching children aspiring to work in a STEM subject the numerous routes to industry they can take, such as being an apprentice at CAL International!
